63.01 (Schermerhorn Statement)
23 August 1945; 24 August 1945
This document is an original typewritten transcription of a broadcast of "Resurgent Netherlands" radio that reported the public protest against Premier Schermerhorn's intention to release the "light cases" among the imprisoned Dutch Nazis (see preceding document 63.01 ["Rain of Protests"]). Members of the Dutch Underground resistance, as well as the Communist Party and the Netherlands Forces of the Interior, openly decried this proposal. The Premier subsequently stated that the rumor that 60,000 prisoners would be freed was groundless. The print quality is clear but faint. The paper is thin but only slightly browning.
